Globalisation phenomena can be recorded scientifically and expressed in figures. The effects on the global community, on the other hand, are more difficult to depict: Relationships between people remain opaque - regardless of whether they take place in spatial proximity or are mediated across spatial distances through the media. Yet the image one forms of others is always already preformed. Only supposedly does globality open up spaces and connect people. As a visual medium, photography plays a decisive role in the visual negotiation and construction of globality. Photographic images can manipulate and reinforce prejudices. But they can also enlighten and, in the best case, contribute to rethinking one's own view of the other.
Nine photographic and multimedia positions by photographers from the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts and the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles will be shown in the premises of Different e.V., which critically and self-reflexively deal with the topic of globality. Their points of view and modes of presentation could hardly be more heterogeneous. In one relevant aspect, however, they are similar: globality has something to do with ourselves and is never something that takes place somewhere in the world without our participation - and so the view into the distance is first and foremost one into our own imaginary worlds.
