For two semesters, eleven students from the Faculty of Art at Essen University of Fine Arts, under the direction of Professor Anja Kempe and Professor Thomas Wrede, developed photographic and media works on the festival theme of ‘Chaos’.

Feelings of happiness, pain and other strong emotions are expressed in photographs, overpaintings, moving images and performative processes. Antiques and dystopian landscapes form a stage on which the inconspicuous develops transformative potential. Recurring everyday situations become individual extravagance measured against social conventions.

The exhibition concept is based on the assumption that chaos arises from intertwined contradictions. The oxymoron (plural oxymora) as a linguistic unit of two mutually exclusive terms symbolises the exhibition title for the students' works. They show a restless calm and an orderly disorder. Constricting emptiness meets gaping fullness.
