Projektraum Fotografie
Since 2020, Elisabeth Sonneck has been realising a long-term project that uses colour to examine phenomena of farewell, remembrance, fading, celebration and decay between pomp and chaos. The starting point is research into the 250-year-old cemetery in the small town of Die in the south of France.
For her site-specific projects, Sonneck creates colouristic memories of the situation on small-format paper, as well as a photographic inventory in unedited mobile phone photos. This visual material transforms the physical location, traces and atmospheres of use, history and social reality - in colour.
In the photography project space, Sonneck's research is combined with the ‘scroll paintings’ she has been developing since 2006. Differentiated colour spectra are created on long, rolled strips of paper in an improvisation that emphasises the immediate physical moment: the staggered stops of the multiple overlapping brushstrokes create complex biographies of colour and rhythm.
The production-related rolling tension of the paper is utilised in continuous metamorphosis and recycling for flexible embodiments. Sonneck's scroll paintings are brought into a precarious, precise balance with often broken found objects from the urban space - painting and worthless everyday remnants collide in symbiosis. Here, too, the view opens up to the abundance of the unstable, the fragile, the transitory.
